Qomolangma Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Nyalam, Tibet Himalaya. The Qomolangma Gr was named by Mu Enzhi (1973) after Mount Qomolangma (Mt. Everest). The type section is located in Zhumulangma-Nyalam-Jiala Mountains, Tibet.
Synonym: (珠穆朗玛群)
Lithology and Thickness
The Qomolangma Gr consists of (from bottom to top): (1) Youyiqiao Fm of kyanite, staurolite, biotite schist, two-mica schist, sillimanite biotite schist and biotite quartz schist, interbedded with minor gneiss and diopside marble in the middle part; (2) Dingrenbuqiao Fm of biotite schist, biotite quartz schist and quartz schist with gneiss; (3) Kengshanqiao Fm of garnet quartz schist, biotite quartz schist, biotite and two-mica gneiss, interbedded with diopside marble and phlogopite marble in the middle part and migmatite in the bottom; (4) Jiaquqiao Fm of mainly schist and gneiss. The thickness of the Qomolangma Group is over 17,000 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The next older unit is the metavolcanics of the Nyalam Gr (Jiangdong Fm).
Upper contact
Next younger unit is early Paleozoic (no details given).
Regional extent
Zhumulangma-Nyalam-Jiala Mountains, Tibet. Westwards to Ngari area, Neoproterozoic is named as the Namunani Group, which consists mainly of various gneisses and black and white alternations of chert and fine-grained quartzite.
